Honed concrete in Bunbury and the South West

Clutch Construction hones concrete for pool surrounds, driveways, paths and floors across Bunbury and the South West of Western Australia. It is the finish we suggest most often for outdoor areas.
How it works
Honing grinds the surface with diamond abrasives, but stops before the fine grits that bring up a gloss. The result is a smooth, flat, matte surface. Depending on how deep we grind, you get a cream finish or a light show of sand and stone. A sealer protects it from stains and wear.

Pool surrounds and outdoor areas
Around a pool, grip and glare matter. A honed surface does not reflect sunlight like a polished one and feels less slick underfoot when wet. It also works for patios, paths and entries, in new slabs or in sound existing ones.

Driveways
A honed driveway keeps the clean concrete look without a high gloss. We pour and finish concrete driveways as one job, so the slab and the honed surface are planned together.
Other finishes
If you like the idea but want a limestone look, see liquid limestone. To compare against a glossier floor, see polished concrete.
Honed concrete also works indoors where you want a flat, low-sheen floor. Tell us where it is going and how it will be used, and we will say whether honing is the right call.
Before you start
Honing exposes whatever is in the slab, so the concrete mix and the way it was finished decide how the result looks. On a new slab, we can plan the pour for honing. On an existing one, we look at its age, any cracks and any old sealer first, then show you what to expect. Photos of the area with your enquiry make this quicker.

Common questions
- What is honed concrete?
- Honed concrete is ground to a smooth, matte or low-sheen finish. It stops at a coarser stage than polishing, so it has less shine and more grip.
- Is honed concrete good around a pool?
- Yes. Its matte, textured feel suits wet areas, and it avoids the glare of a glossy surface. We discuss grip and sealer options with you before starting.
- What is the difference between honed and polished concrete?
- Both are ground. Polished goes through finer abrasives to a higher sheen. Honed stops earlier, which leaves a flatter look and a more grippy surface.
- Can a driveway be honed?
- Yes. A honed driveway gives a clean, matte finish with more grip than a glossy one. See our concrete driveways page for how we build them.
